Diseases of the heart are the leading cause of death in Indiana and in the United States. In response to this public health epidemic, Baptist Health Floyd’ Heart and Vascular Center provides a full spectrum of services from diagnostic testing to cardio-vascular surgery. The Center is home to Southern Indiana’s first open-heart surgery program.
An integral part of this program is two Cardiac Catheterization labs that provide diagnostics and life-saving procedures. Because early intervention can save lives, the cardiac catheterization team responds to emergent heart attack cases by immediately moving the patient from the Emergency Center to the Cardiac Cath Lab for intervention.
From 2008-2010 the number of patients requiring cardiac catheterization care at Baptist Health Floyd increased by 40 percent and operating hours at the Hospital were increased in 2010 to accommodate the growing need for cardiac care. From 2010-2013 Baptist Health Floyd yet again saw the number of patients served increase this time by another 20 percent. The current two cardiac catheterization labs are often times at full capacity as well as the 12 bed outpatient cardiovascular units.
To meet the growing demand for cardiovascular services, while also enhancing the service offerings, the Hospital invested $2.8 million in expanding its cardiac care services by adding a third cardiac catheterization lab and expanding the outpatient cardiovascular unit by five additional beds. This third cardiac catheterization lab is equipped to do electrophysiology studies and treatment – the only one in Southern Indiana.
