Floyd Memorial Foundation Cross Art Contest

Print Contest Application

Call for Entries

The Floyd Memorial Foundation is embarking on a Chapel Capital Campaign to raise funds to construct a chapel off the main lobby at Baptist Health Floyd in spring 2020. The chapel will accentuate the importance of Christ, highlight His ability to heal, and help support the spiritual health of all those entering through the chapel doors to impact their overall emotional, mental and physical health and well-being. One important component of the chapel is to have a specially designed cross created by an artist, local, regional or national, that will hang at the chapel’s altar.

Overview – Vision

The Floyd Memorial Foundation invites all artists to submit artwork of a cross for the Cross Art Contest. The cross should embody artistic creativity and design and serve as a symbol of comfort and inspiration to all those entering the chapel. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” ~ John 14:27.

All cross art entries will be on display in the main lobby at Baptist Health Floyd and available for viewing August through October 2019. Hospital staff, hospital visitors and community members can vote on their favorite cross. The cross that receives the most number of votes while on display at Baptist Health Floyd will be installed at the altar in the new chapel at the hospital once completed. The winning artist will receive a $1,500 stipend and recognition in a community press release and on a plaque located next to the mounted cross. The plaque will identify the winning artist by name, location, a brief description of the artist’s insight regarding the cross art design, and a brief biography about the artist including contact and website information.

Project Description

The winning cross will hang on a 90 square foot stone accent wall situated at one end of the chapel, the area that serves as the back wall of the chapel and the back drop behind a small landing that will serve as the altar. The cross should be a traditional “cross,” defined as a “geometrical figure consisting of two intersecting lines, usually perpendicular to each other, one running horizontally and the other vertically.” The cross submitted for the art contest should not
be a crucifix and should not include any other symbols or subjects on it. The cross may be constructed of glass, clay, wire, paper, film, fabric or other solid medium that maintains its shape. It cannot have any accompanying cases, lighting/electricity, or appendages attached to it. It may be a minimum of three (3) feet tall to a maximum of five (5) feet tall and a minimum of 18” wide to a maximum of four (4) feet wide.
